2005 is the year of The Independents. With a new album, a new website, a new comic book and a new DVD slated for this year, it is an incredible testament to how driven this band is to spread their one-of-a-kind sound.

The Independents are everything that by all conventional standards, a band should not be. Rock, Surf, Punk, and a heavy dose of Ska should not mix but The Independents have taken all these elements and have broken down any and all barriers in their way. And if this isn’t enough, mix with equal parts old Horror movies and Elvis Presley and you now have one truly frighteningly good band.It was the early 90’s and the lack of interesting music that saw the spawn of The Independents. Formed by singer Evil Presly and guitarist Willy B, they have kept to their vision of musical wickedness over the last decade and then some.

Non-Stop touring is the way of life for these four horsemen and being on the road constantly has its challenges. Only a few years back while touring the US, The Independents had all of their equipment including their van stolen. This did not stop them but on their last European tour in Fall 2004, they were dealt probably their heaviest blow yet. On a dark and stormy night their tour bus careened off an icy road and rolled over numerous times. Luckily, only broken bones, cuts and bruises were suffered and now that all wounds have healed, The Independents are in the final preparation stages for a full on world-wide tour this year.

We recently had a chance to speak with Evil Presly and so without further adieu and freshly back from the grave…

1) How did the band get together?

E: Willy B and I have always been in bands together since we were like 15 and 16. We were in one band called spies on sabbatical that was a pretty cool unique ska band. It had an oingo boingo kinda feel to it. This was in 89 so there was not any ska bands really around. We were really into ska big time from the specials to the selector to desmond decker..you know that era of it .Our singer went into the airforce so will and I started a band called Brother Rude with an old friend from the sex mutants and two guys Willy met in college. We were a party band. Thats all we did was party all the time and do these crazy gigs and tours. We didn't take it seriouse at all at first. We would do any gig from house partys to this anti drug tour that was sponsored by dominos pizza and pepsi cola. We were always loaded on that and I'm sure people knew it. It was so obviouse hahaha. But we got paid pretty well and we didn't have to buy food for months. We had so much soda and pizza. Plus we carried all our friends with us and the shows were free.Anyway ... We got sick of it after awhile because we really wanted to do more then just get fucked up and goof off. So willy and myself and the bass player Maggot left and joined up with two other friends Dave Glass and Danny O to start the Independents. We were all so different but yet we connected it was great.Thats how we came up with the name.We all wanted to get on the road and make something with it.so thats how we started pretty much.

2) Do you ever get tired of the Misfits comparison?

E: Nah. I'm a huge fan of the original misfits. They were one of my all time favorites and will allways. It's a compliment to be compared to that line up.

3) How has your music changed since the band started?

E:Well first off we have been though so many members that it had to have changed. Each player we have had has played different. We never try to write any type of songs. we just let what comes out take over. I can tell that what we grew up on or what we are listening to at the time we are writting really effects what comes out as well. We are all into so many types of music that you never know what will come out.The early stuff was more ska and then it has gotten a little heavier here and there. We got so burned out on ska after the mid 90's . There was just so much cookie cutter crap being shoved down everyones throat that it killed the scene. We wrote the song death notice and the song full moon arise after hanging out with Lee Rocker from the stray cats. He blew us a way and we were effected by it. Most of the songs on the Full Moon Arise ep were written in mind for the Misfits. Thats why they sound so much like something they would do. Thats a long story lol our next record will have a little of everything on it like Back from the Grave did. From ska to hardcore and maybe even a little nod to a country legend.

4) You released the Full Moon Arise EP. How has the CD done and what are your plans for a new full length? Have you decided on a label for the new CD?

E: Full Moon Arise has done really well. I was told from the label it shipped out 3500 copies the first week it came out and has been a steady seller. It is in almost all the major chains which really helps. The Mom and pop record stores are almost all gone and that really sucks. The ones that are still out there ..most are carrying it and so is interpunk and a few other web companies. We have had a lot of success selling them at shows and on our site as well. That's one thing I can say we have always sold out of CD's on the road. Every fucking tour we take more and more out and we still never have enough. I never understood why some of the labels we dealt with in the past didn't push to get them in more stores. As far as the next full length record . We are still talking with Fast music about putting it out.We hope to have it out by October . We are recording it with Daniel Rey. We are just trying to see when we can get in on his schedual. He is always working on something. The (tent) tittle for the next record is Eternal Bond.

5) There is an obvious horror influence on the band. What are your favorite horror and science fiction movies/books/TV shows?

I love all the classic Universal Horror flicks.I was always really big into the Eerie and creepy comics as a kid as well.As far as tv. I grew up with two older brothers in the 70's and 80's. Back then you had three channels and on Sat nights they would play the old horror movies with a horror host. I loved it. The twilight zone and then tales from the crypt on HBO. Oh and the Hichhiker haha

6) Because your band pulls from many different influences/styles in your music, what is your audience like? Do you ever find that your fans separate themselves into different groups at shows?

E:We have some of the best open minded fans/Friends out there. You can find all types at our shows. I have seen the guys from Six Feet Under hanging out in the crowd with the guys from Blank 77 and Ronnie Spector.Old and young. alot of people who come out to the shows are always saying "man I love your band and well it's sick but my Mom does too. she made me bring her" haha . Look at some of the bands that have done shows with us from Cheap Trick to the Ramones to The world friendship society to the casualties to the queers. Hell we even did show with Sabastian Bach hahaha. We have alot of deadheads that come out too. They all seem to get along great.

7) Who are your favorite bands to play with and what are you favorite cities to play in?

E:The tour with the Ramones will never be matched. I love to tour with the Voodoo Glow Skulls. Those guys are great friends and love to party like us. We have always had a blast on all the shows we have done with them. The Queers are great guys as well. Joe is a great guy and Philip is another friend who like to throw down. As far as places nothing comes close to St. Louis and Jeff with his death wish for us on Jager. That is always a crazy show! I like Columbus Oh a lot and Tampa, FL has always been one of the funniest places on earth for us. Man I love them all hahaha.

10) Any final thoughts?

I'd just like to thank everyone who has supported us over the years and who keep coming out.Always be yourself .
